Talking to a teenager is different from talking to a young child, it requires genuine listening that respects their growing independence.
Teens usually do not push back against rules themselves, they push back against feeling that no one understands them. That is why entering a discussion head on often results in more resistance rather than less.
Instead of saying you have to listen to me, try saying I see this differently than you do, can we talk about it. This keeps the door open instead of shutting the teen out.
A teen who feels their opinion has been heard, even when they do not get their way, stays more open to communication instead of withdrawing.
